"IT'S ALL ABOUT LOOKS," SAYS BOLLYWOOD
It's about getting the heroine's hairdo right to suit the walls. Confused! But that is what filmmakers are doing these days — styling the look of their films.
Some forthcoming movies, like Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay , Yash Raj Films' Dhoom2 , Vidhu Vinod Chopra's Eklavya or Vipul Shah's Namaste London , are all examples of how directors are now paying as much attention to the look of their films as that of the stars.
So, what does a stylist do? Anaita Shroff Adjania, who has designed the look of Dhoom 2 , says: “A stylist looks into every aspect of the film, which includes the character's wardrobe and attitude.”
Rajeev Chudasama, who has worked on the style of RGV Ke Sholay (including the Big B's eye colours), informs: “My team has designed the look for the entire movie keeping the script in mind and this includes Amitabh's den and the auto that Nisha Kothari will drive.”
Designer Raghuvendra Rathore, who has worked for Eklavya , adds: “While the focus is on the costumes and the look of the characters, it extends to other areas like the backdrop and the look of the song as well.”
This focused styling has been happening for some time, though it is picking up momentum now. Earlier, Aki Narula had styled Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli , while Sameer Chanda and Dolly Ahluwalia had worked on the look of Vishal Bharadwaj's Omkara .
Filmmakers agree that effective styling accentuates the appeal of the film. Says Vishal: “In Omkara , Uttar Pradesh, which is the backdrop, is as pertinent to the film as any character. Sameer and Dolly did a great job based on their research on the interiors of UP.” With the stakes at the box office getting higher by the day, filmmakers are certainly not leaving any aspect unattended.
